x_dj: (poker in the morning liquor in the eveni)

Just a reminder, Eurovision party at my place tonight. Everyone is invited. I have liquor from all 18 semi-finalist countries, and whichever is the best gets my 12 points for the finals. (Doesn't matter that I'm not European, there was easy ways around that.)

I would feel somewhat obligated to assert the inevitable win for the German representative, but having actually seen their performance, I am wondering if I can implore someone to turn back time so I could defect again.

Are you kidding me? Germany's is great! Granted it's a few years too late and the singer is actually American, but Europe is hardly leading the way in pop music anymore, so some tardiness is to be expected.

Their problem, though, is that it's very much not a German song. No national identity in it, and IMO that should cost a lot. (Not that Europeans tend to care about that, but the commentators will.)

Sadly, yes. The days of pioneers such as Die Fantastischen Vier and the rest of the Alte Schule are long gone. Such a shame.

Children of today with your iPods and your MP3s. No appreciation for the true classics. If I had a lawn, I would tell you all to get off it.

Are we still voting for the Serbian entry?

They're on Thursday's semi-final, but so is Norway, which I'm liking more and more. So it depends which is better: the rakia or the akvavit.

Bonus points if people talk using limericks?

I'll be there. And drinking heavily in the hopes of forgetting that Switzerland's entry is named "The Lovebugs." I mean, really? It's things like this that make me think neutrality should never have gone out of style.

Well, the UK's soppy ballad has been booted out, so I'll have to find someone else to vote for. That's what you get for getting Llyod Webber to write your music. *shudders*

I'd suggest the Czech Republic's Romani rap group, but they're not making the finals. You might like Bosnia's.

That's true. I can be thankful that Switzerland's answer to Snow Patrol wasn't penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber. You give me such hope. *grin*

And yet Finland's "Waldo's People" got through to the next level. Where's the justice?

Do their fans dress in red-and-white-striped sweaters with ski hats?

I am so there.

Is Finland one of the countries?

Yup, and they're going to the finals on Saturday. They took Montenegro's place, if you ask me.
